Jemerico Bell stepped onto Tiger Field as a freshman with high expectations. He had always been a star on the football field. Those who had followed him in recreation football, middle school, and junior varsity knew he was special and had the athletic gifts that would soon bring the black and gold faithful to their feet.

As a freshman in 2009 amidst a hoard of talented runners and the immense talents of QB Malcom Eady, Bell found his role as a receiver. He hauled in an 87 yard TD reception against Dodge County and his speed was evident. He had an 18 yard TD reception in the first round playoff win against MacIntosh Academy and then an incredible fingertip grab in the corner of the end zone against Fitzgerald that showed off his considerable skill.

Bell’s progression continued in his sophomore year and he teamed with bruising RB Quan Gardner as part of the “thunder and lightning” tandem. He carried the ball 117 times for over 700 yards and 5 touchdowns, while also catching 10 passes as a receiver. However, he was injured and unable to play in the first round playoff game against Brooks County. His absence slowed the offense and Swainsboro suffered a 15-14 defeat without its speed threat.

In 2011, Bell’s production dipped dramatically as he only scored 2 touchdowns on the season. It seemed as if the stage was set for Bell to dominate but it just didn’t happen. His numbers slipped to 379 yards on 59 carries, though he caught 11 passes for 225 yards. The Tigers limped to a 3-7 record.

But all things seem on track for Bell’s senior showcase. Through 3 games, Bell is becoming a star at RB. He leads the team with 38 carries, 238 yards, and 4 TDs, all team highs. Those are great numbers, but it’s on defense where Bell has come into his own. He leads the team with 26 total tackles, 2 interceptions, and 1 fumble caused. He flies around the field and punishes ball carriers as his speed and power combine to propel a ferocious striking ability.

Friday night against Pierce County, Bell had the game of his life with all of his considerable talents on display. The numbers speak for themselves: 17 carries, 153 yards rushing, and 3 TDs. He made the most important catch of the game on 4th down for 23 yards. Bell had a 74 yard run for a touchdown as well as a 44 yard kickoff return to put the Tigers in great field position. Defensively, Bell was a beast. He totaled 11 tackles to lead the team. Two interceptions, one in which he returned for a touchdown and one force fumble. Pierce County will be experiencing nightmares of #10 for some time.

“I expected Jemerico to have a great year and he is off to a great start,” said head coach David Johnson. “It is hard to compare to anyone because all of the great ones have their own styles and personalities. He can hurt you in so many different ways. I think his overall versatility as a player may separate him from the rest. He is a great kid, a tremendous athlete, and a terrific leader.”

Bell is poised to lead his team to a great season. It has seemed over the course of his high school career, when he excels so do the Tigers. The Tigers will look to improve to 3-1 against Dublin this Friday night.
