Swainsboro Tiger football player Rico Johnson is making a name for himself even before he has taken a single snap for the black and gold. Johnson gave his verbal commitment to attend the University of Georgia on June 16th at Mark Richt’s football camp. Johnson was ineligible to play last season for Swainsboro after transferring from Treutlen County High School. However, he has already turned plenty of heads by winning the State Championship this past spring in the 100m sprint and his performance at the football camp got him an offer that he couldn’t refuse.

“(UGA) was my dream school,” said Johnson. “I always wanted to go there.”

Rico has lightening fast speed as he has been clocked as fast as 4.25 in the 40 yard dash. Those skills will come in handy for the 5’ 11” 171 lb junior WR/DB.

Tiger football fans will undoubtedly be excited to follow Johnson during his senior season to see what he brings to the table. According to Johnson, he expects to get time “all over” the field this upcoming season, which includes receiver, defensive back, and kick/punt returner. That kind of speed is a rare quality and a dangerous weapon.

“I think route running, my vision, and my ball skills are my best qualities (other than speed) on a football field,” said Johnson.

Rico will be the first Swainsboro Tiger football player to play for the Dawgs since Greg Waters was an All SEC performer in 1985. Johnson’s pledge is only a verbal commitment though, which is non-binding. Official signing day isn’t until February 6, 2013.
