Swainsboro High School Wrestling Team Holds Their Own
The Swainsboro High School Wrestling team competed in their toughest test yet this year, the sectional tournament. This tournament was comprised of the east side of the state. To make the state tournament, the wrestlers had to place in the top 8 at the tournament. The tigers sent 6 wrestlers to this tournament. Thomas Waters, Alexander Carswell, Ronald Lucas, Steven Chrysosferidis, Jaleel Johnson and Deshon Habersham. The tigers fought hard for 2 long and grueling days. After the completion of day one there was only one tiger that had for sure made it to state. Steven Chrysosferidis was in the semi-finals which guaranteed him a top 6 finish. The rest had to keep fighting to stay afloat in this tournament. The first round of the second day would tell how many of the wrestlers would make it to state. Alexander Carswell lost in this round, but fought back hard to take 9th place which puts him as an alternate at state. Ronald Lucas, Jaleel Johnson, and Deshon Habersham all won in that round, which meant that 4 tigers would make a trip to Atlanta. Steven Chrysosferidis lost a tough 6 minute battle falling 5-3 to Morgan County. This sent him into the Consolation bracket where the 3 other tigers were. Jaleel Johnson lost in the Consolation Quarters to fall to the 7th and 8th place matches where he took 7th. Ronald Lucas lost a heartbreaker in the Consolation semi-finals, which sent him wrestling for 5th and 6th. He lost a 2-1 match which placed him 6th at sectionals. Deshon Habersham lost in the consolation finals to Morgan County in overtime which set him up for 4th place, and Steven Chrysosferidis won the consolation finals which placed him 3rd. The tigers really held their own in the sectional tournament. The tournament is a 2 day grind competing against elite wrestlers from the east side of the state. The 4 wrestlers will be traveling to the Gwinnett Center Arena on Thursday to compete in the state tournament Thursday, Friday and Saturday.
