SHS Wrestling Team competes in first matches

The Swainsboro High School Wrestling team had their first matches this past week. On Tuesday, Dec. 7 they traveled to Treutlen for dual matches with Treutlen High School and Jeff Davis. Representing the Tigers was: Steven Parkey, Kendell Flournoy, Dalvin Lott, Thomas Waters, Jeffrey Downs, Jarvis Moore, Chris Coleman, Justin Ilugbo, Brandon Coleman, Malik Brantley, Steven Chrysosferidos, Deshon Habersham, Peter Chrysosferidos, David Porter, James Johnson, Ronald Lucas, Donald Harrell and Wesley Moore. First they wrestled Treutlen High School. Dalvin Lott, Justin Ilugbo, Brandon Coleman and Peter Chrysosferidos had pins in this match. Second match was against Jeff Davis. James Johnson and Ronald Lucas had pins in this match.
On December 11 the Tigers traveled to Columbus, GA for a dual tournament at Northside High School. Teams participating were Hardaway High School (AAAA), Northside-Columbus (AAAA), Upson-Lee High School (AAAA), Spencer High School (AA), Carver High School (AA), Shaw High School (AAA) and Smiths Station. Representing the Tigers was: Thomas Waters, Jeffrey Downs, Lashon Sherrod, Jarvis Moore, James Johnson, Brandon Coleman, Justin Ilugbo, Dalvin Lott, James Arnold, Deshon Habersham, David Porter, Michael Shoemake and Wesley Moore. The Tigers lost their first match against Spencer High School 27-54. James Johnson, Brandon Coleman, Dalvin Lott and Deshon Habersham all had pins in this first match and David Porter won his match 4-2 in double overtime. The second match was against Carver High School and they won 59-30. Lashon Sherrod, Jarvis Moore, James Johnson, Brandon Coleman, Dalvin Lott, James Arnold and Deshon Habersham all had pins in this second match. The third match was against Upson-Lee and in a close battle they lost 40- 41. Thomas Waters, Lashon Sherrod, Jarvis Moore, Brandon Coleman, James Arnold and Deshon Habersham all had pins in this third match and Dalvin Lott won his match by 8 points. The Tigers fourth match was against Smiths Station and they won by forfeit. The fifth and final match was against Shaw High School, the Tigers lost 33-48. Lashon Sherrod, Jarvis Moore, Dalvin Lott and James Arnold all had pins this last match and Wesley Moore won his match 10-5. The Tigers finished the tournament in 6th place.
Come out and support your Tiger wrestling team this weekend December 17 and 18. They will be traveling to Treutlen High School in Soperton, GA for The Viking Invitational Tournament. Wrestling starts at 5 pm on December 17 and 9 am on December 18. Teams competing this weekend include: Appling, Burke County, Crawford, Dodge, East Laurens, Irwin, Jeff Davis, Jenkins (Savannah), Metter, Montgomery, Swainsboro, Telfair County, Toombs County, Treutlen, Vidalia, Ware, Washington Wilkes and West Laurens JV. Coach Godwin said “The wrestlers are continuing to improve each day. We are on schedule to really make some noise in the region this year. I am very proud of them. This year’s team is very talented and not afraid to step in and do what is necessary to help out the team.â€
