Swainsboro Middle School will host the annual Matthew Anders Memorial Wrestling Tournament. The tournament starts at 8 a.m., Saturday, Dec. 5, 2009. Teams participating are: Swainsboro, Metter, Vidalia, Toombs Co., Central Gwinnett, Brunswick, Glynn Co., Greenbrier, Jenkins (Savannah), and Treutlen Co.

Former Coach Brandon Jernigan organized the first wrestling tournament in December 2003. The annual tournament is traditionally the first week of December. In 2003 the “Tiger Invitational” was hosted at Swainsboro Middle School. December of 2004 the invitational was held at East Georgia College. In August of 2005 Matthew Anders was killed in a car accident. Matthew was a 9th grade wrestler who had been wrestling for 2 years at Swainsboro Middle School. In December of 2005 the invitational was changed to the Matthew Anders Memorial Wrestling Tournament. This tournament is in honor of one that loved wrestling and the Swainsboro community. Matthew was well known in the wrestling community in Swainsboro and surrounding counties. He was small in stature, but huge in heart and desire. He was passionate about the wrestling program and his teammates. Matthew always had a laugh and a joke for his teammates and others. His passion for the wrestling program will be carried on for years to come. Matthew Anders had the true “Eye of the Tiger”.

Please make plans to attend the Matthew Anders Memorial Wrestling Tournament. The event will be action packed with some great wrestlers from around the area. Concessions will be open for the event at Swainsboro Middle School. For complete Wrestling season schedule and team roster visit www.swainsborotigerathletics.com
