The 2009 high school football regular season is over and the Tigers are anxious to start the “new” season. All that has happened to this point will be cleaned from the slate and each team must either win, or go home.

Swainsboro completed the regular season in fine fashion by knocking off the Toombs County Bulldogs 21-0. The Tigers will enter the playoffs with a record of 9-1 for the third time in four years.

The Tigers led by a scant 7-0 score at halftime, courtesy of RB Shaquille Cowart’s 6 yard touchdown run in the 2nd quarter. Toombs County did a good job of limiting the Tigers’ offensive possessions by keeping the clock moving with an effective running game despite not being able to dent the scoreboard.

Swainsboro QB Malcolm Eady took things into his own hands in the second half. Eady broke loose for a 57 yard run to the two yard line. Two plays later he scored on a 1 yard plunge to add the Tigers second touchdown. Midway through the 4th quarter, Eady struck again, this time with a 51 yard bomb to WR Lynquez Blair to wrap up the scoring up 21-0.

Eady finished the day with 128 yards rushing on 11 carries and completed 12 of 21 pass attempts for 144 yards. WR Zach Jones led all receivers with 7 catches for 66 yards. Cowart and fellow RB Cobie McCloud combined for 104 rushing yards on 18 carries.

The Tigers are playing with a lot of confidence and must be considered a dangerous threat to play deep into the 2009 postseason.

“If we are executing, I do believe that we can play with anyone on any given Friday night,” said head coach Scott Roberts. Focusing on the task at hand and making plays will be the key to our success, as those things are always the key in the play-offs. This time of year, whoever makes the plays will advance.”

The Tigers now turn their eyes towards the McIntosh County Academy Buccaneers. From region 2 AA, the Bucs are 7-3 and have lost only two region games against power house Charlton County and the two seed Appling County Pirates. McIntosh has a dangerous offense and has averaged over 33 points per game this season. They are coached by former Swainsboro defensive coordinator Robby Robinson.

“MCA is an extremely quick and talented football team with a lot of playmakers,” said Roberts. It's like watching ourselves on film. I expect it to be a great high school football game.”

Around the region, Jefferson County will play host to Tatnall County. Vidalia will be playing against the Appling County. Dublin will travel to the swamp to play Charlton County.
