Many consider the December portion of the high school basketball schedule to be a time of building. Working out the kinks and gelling as a unit are priorities early in the season as teams play a chaotic preliminary schedule leading up to the holidays and Christmas tournaments.
The Swainsboro Tigers boys basketball squad has weathered that early challenge, sitting at 5-5 for the season. However, the Tigers excelled in the important games that were played in December against sub region foes Screven County and Laney and are 2-0 where it counts most.
The Tigers went 2-3 during the holiday tournaments with wins over Dougherty and Thomson, while losing to Westover, Monroe, and West Laurens. Even with the sub par record, Tigers’ Head Coach Leroy Jordan felt that his team made progress and deemed the tournaments a success.
“December and the holiday tournaments are all about fine tuning a team and finding out which players can be counted on to produce in January and February,†said Jordan. We work on being a versatile team…one that can play a slow, half court game and one that can turn up the tempo and push the ball when necessary. In December, we play a lot of players and try to find the strengths of our team and improve on our weaknesses.â€
Jordan went on to say that the playing rotation will be shortened over the next few weeks and players would have to earn their minutes. He wants his team to be prepared for the crucial games they will face in the upcoming weeks.
“We’ve really focused on the inside game lately because we need to establish that part of the offense,†said Jordan. Teams will take away your guards and we need to be able to get our big men the ball when that happens to be a more balanced team.â€
January marks the stretch run for the regular season and Swainsboro will kick off a three week burst beginning on Tuesday, January 5th against Washington County. Ten games over that span will certainly give fans an idea of what to expect when the region playoffs begin in mid-February.
This weekend presents two marquee match-ups as rivals Jefferson County and defending state champion Dublin stroll into the fabulous Tigers Den in a test of region dominance. Friday’s game against the Warriors will tip off at 8:45 p.m. while the Irish game is a late afternoon 5:45 p.m. start. Be sure to get there early for both contests as these games will possibly sell out judging by the history of attendance with these two rivalries.
