The Swainsboro Tigers dropped their season record to 3-7 by getting shutout by the playoff-bound Laney Wildcats 34-0 Friday night in Augusta.
It was an odd season for Tiger Nation. Not since 2005 has the final game of the season not had some drama to it, whether in the playoffs or a must-win game to make the playoffs. The final game always means something. However, 2011 just never got on track.
Friday night, Laney pushed Swainsboro around. The Wildcats created gaping holes in the line of scrimmage in the first half and their backs were fast and elusive. Sixteen minutes into the game and Laney had scored three times, leading 22-0. The Tigers didn’t get their initial first down until their final drive of the half…and that was a result of a “roughing the kicker” call as Swainsboro punted from their own end zone. The Tigers turned that call into a drive that could have put them back into the ballgame. Unfortunately, they were tackled just short of the goal line on a 4th and goal play from the five.
Swainsboro’s defense played to a stalemate in the 3rd quarter as both teams went scoreless, though the Tigers had their chance but fumbled into the end zone from the one yard line for a touchback. Laney was the better team, no doubt. But Swainsboro struggled with consistence just as they had all season.
Laney wrapped up the scoring in the 4th quarter with two touchdown runs and secured a resounding 34-0 victory. It was an unceremonious end to a season only a year after the Tigers completed a 10-0 regular season.
