The Swainsboro Tigers (1-4) rolled over the Southeastern Bulloch Yellow Jackets 48-13 to gain their first win of the season last Friday night. No one would have predicted that Swainsboro would have taken five games to get their first victory, but this looked much more like Swainsboro football.
Without a doubt, this is what Tigers young and old expected to see this season. It might have taken a while to get going and a weaker opponent to produce the results, but this is Tiger football. Swainsboro unveiled their third QB of the season as Deantae Johnson took his turn behind center. The running game was in high gear for the game as Swainsboro out-rushed their opponents for the first time this season, 336 yards to 140 yards, averaging nearly 9 yards per carry.
Swainsboro set the tempo early as RB Jemerico Bell took his first carry 42 yards and the Tigers were in business. Swainsboro scored often in the first half, racking up 34 points to the Yellow Jackets 6 points. When the dust had settled, the Tigers had collected nearly 400 total yards and 7 touchdowns.
Quan Gardner led the way with 99 yards on 8 carries with 3 touchdowns. He was one of 3 running backs with over 70 yards rushing. Bell had 72 yards on 6 carries and Zach Daniels had 82 yards on 5 carries and a touchdown. Johnson had 29 yards on 4 carries and was 3 of 3 through the air for 52 yards and a touchdown.
Swainsboro will look to sustain the momentum and even their region record this week against East Laurens (1-5) on the road. A win against the Falcons will set up an important home contest against the undefeated Dublin Irish on October 14th.
Region 3AA is still up for grabs (behind Dublin and Laney) as teams are jockeying for a playoff spot and the Tigers are certainly in the mix. Jefferson County struggled but won against Dodge County last week, 21-19. Bleckley County is currently the only other team in the region with a winning region record at 2-1, but they still have Swainsboro, Laney, and Jefferson County on their schedule. If Swainsboro can right the ship and take care of business against East Laurens, Bleckley County, and Screven County then a playoff spot is still within reach.
