Eric Worthen had a special season for the Swainsboro Tigers football team. Statistically, the line backer had one of the most prolific seasons ever by a Tigers’ defender. Worthen accumulated an astounding 171 total tackles for the stout Tigers’ defense. Swainsboro allowed only 96 point during their 10-1 season. Brookwood’s Cameron Lynch led all classifications with 188 total tackles this year.
Though there were limited records to compare to Worthen’s, it’s safe to say that he had a season for the ages. This weekend, Worthen was recognized as an Associated Press 1st team All-State selection. Teammate David Porter made the 2nd team as an offensive lineman and Dewan Somerville was an honorable mention.
In the Atlanta Journal and Constitution’s All-State Team, Worthen again was a 1st team selection while defensive lineman Jaleel Johnson garnered an honorable mention.
Locally, WTOC honored Worthen with the Defensive Player of the Year award.
Swainsboro also dominated the All-Region Team with a multitude of selections. On offense, running back Quan Gardner, tight end LaHarold Lott, and offensive lineman David Porter made the 1st team. Offensive lineman Michael Muns made 2nd team All-Region. Running back Jemerico Bell was an honorable mention on offense.
On the defensive side of the ball, Worthen was honored as the Defensive Player of the Year and Lynquez Blair was also award as the Region’s 2-way player of the year for his work at quarterback and special teams. Defensive lineman Jaleel Johnson, line backer Dewan Somerville, and defensive back Fazon Parrish were All-Region 1st team members. Defensive back Shaquille Cowart and defensive end Hubert Artis made 2nd team All-Region.
Worthen may have been the standout for his remarkable performance in 2010, but he certainly had help. Somerville stacked up impressive numbers as well with 130 total tackles. Defensive lineman Artis and Johnson both collected 9 tackles for loss (Artis recovered 4 fumbles). Defensive back Cowart led the team with 4 interceptions. And at full back, Gardner rushed for 1255 yards on 210 carries with 12 touchdowns.
